Watch Out 3

Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.” Matthew 7:15

With the proliferation of new teachings jesus had to warn his disciples to be on guard against false prophets. During the days of the prophets. During the days of Isaiah and Jeremiah, these sentiments were echoed. As Jeremiah 23:16 says, “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord.’” People tend to fill the void with their own opinions; Col. 2:8 recognizes that recognizing false prophets is crucial for us as believers. The Bible warns us to be vigilant about the messages we hear and who we follow. Not every teacher comes in sincerity; some bring teachings that sound appealing but are ultimately destructive.

“But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them — bringing swift destruction on themselves. – 2 Peter 2:1. As Paul urges in 1 Thessalonians 5:21, “But test everything; hold fast what is good.” When we encounter various teachings, we can evaluate them against Scripture. Falling in love with discernment keeps us grounded in faith, prevents us from falling prey to heresies, and helps us thrive on the truth of God’s Word.
